The Thomas J. Frericks Athletic and Convocation Center is home to the Flyer volleyball team. The Frericks Center is the fourth-largest volleyball-only facility in college volleyball. Its 5,000 seat capacity is behind only Arkansas' Barnhill Arena (9,000), Nebraska's Bob Devaney Center (7,900) and Murray State's Cutchin Fieldhouse (5,500).
In January of 2016, University of Dayton Division of Athletics has received one of the largest gifts in the history of the program from Lori Hausfeld and her family, of Springboro, Ohio. The $1.2 million gift was made in honor of her daughter Kacie, and husband Tom, who both tragically passed away in the spring of 2010 in a plane crash near the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Springboro, Ohio. Kacie was a star volleyball player for the Flyers.
Renovations to Frericks Center, one of a handful of volleyball-only facilities in Division I college athletics, include: a new team lounge, additional lower level seating for fans, a new sound system, upgraded graphics and technology upgrades including two video boards.
UD invested in the volleyball program with a suite in the Cronin Center next to the men's and women's basketball offices in 2012. The athletic department also recently upgraded facilities in 2015 with a $1.8 million renovation of the Frericks Center. A new locker room, enhanced game-day and practice environments, an atrium and improved offices are the result of that renovation.
In 2004, the Frericks Center began a facility upgrade to include new lighting over the volleyball court, new and refurbished seating, and a graphics package with new championship banners -- including the 2003 Atlantic 10 Champions banner and 2003 NCAA Second Round banner. In 2009 the Frericks Center completed the final stages of a makeover designed to reduce player fatigue and injury while giving the Flyer Faithful a warm atmosphere to cheer the University of Dayton on to victory.
The historic Frericks gym floor that once provided the base of the court has been replaced with a state-of-the-art Robbins Bio-channel court, the Sport Court surface has been removed in favor of a return to the hardwood. The multi-layered surface helps reduce the toll taken on a player's body during the explosive movements in volleyball.
Spectator viewing has also been upgraded in Frericks. The rafters have been cleared of unnecessary objects and the ceilings have been painted white to increase brightness in the facility. A new roof was also included in the $300,000 renovation of the Frericks Center.
